Cooperation project with Microsoft Research Cambridge and University of Cambridge

The HCI group of the University of Konstanz has started a new cooperation project with the Integrated Systems Group at Microsoft Research Cambridge and the NanoPhotonics Centre of the University of Cambridge.

The HCI group will explore how the Zoomable Object-Oriented Information Landscape from the permaedia project and the post-WIMP interaction modalities of the Media Room can be applied to build the next generation of knowledge workplaces for scientists in the field of nanophotonics.

Nanophotonics is the study of the behavior of light on the nanometer scale and will in the future provide engineers with novel materials, e.g. for revolutionizing the telecommunications industry by low power, high speed, interference-free devices. To support the Cambridge researchers, the HCI Group from Konstanz and the Integrated Systems Group of Microsoft Research will introduce Surface Computing environments (e.g. tabletop computers, tangible user interfaces) into scientific practice and evaluate how they can be beneficial for scientific knowledge work (e.g. group information management, experiment preparation and result validation).
