Description

This lecture gives an overview of media-psychological foundations and key concepts within networked cooperation. Various theoretical approaches (eg. Media Richness Theory, Social Presence Theory) are introduced and and compared using software applications as examples. In particular, the focus lies on synchronous forms of interaction in virtual worlds. The representation of users (eg. avatars) as well as psychological issues such as media-immersion experience and presence, and cognitive load are discussed based on empirical studies. As an illustration of what is learned, different excursions in Media Labs will be offered as part of the lecture.
