Rethinking Interaction Design with GenAI

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), Foundation Models and Large Language Models (LLMs) are changing the way we develop interactive systems. There are many opportunities as well as problems to consider when attempting user-centred development without involving the actual users. We will look at different stages in the development lifecycle of interactive systems and assess the value of GAI support. We explore how GenAI and LLMs can potentially accelerate the ideation, requirements elicitation, architecture development, prototyping, implementation, evaluation and testing, and deployment of interactive systems. The talk will outline emerging practices, such as the use of prompts for code and system generation, to facilitate prototyping and accelerate implementation. We will also outline fundamental challenges, suggest emerging research directions, and pose research questions. What will software development tools look like in the future? How can we use GenAI efficiently to develop interactive systems without compromising quality? Can this reduce the cost of digital systems? We also speculate on the implications of these developments for researchers, practitioners and society. Besides the academic questions, we will look at practical aspects of prompt engineering for effective use of LLMs in this context. At this stage, we believe that it will massively accelerate digital transformation in many areas. Interactive AI-based tools for systems and software will become a major research direction.
