Eine Bibliothek mit Zukunft!?” (German) and starts at 6.00 PM. The colloquium is hosted by the Institut für Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

This semester, we offer a number of Bachelor and Master projects in which students have the opportunity to actively participate in ongoing research projects.

We, therefore, cordially invite you to come visit us in our MediaRoom (Z924) on Wednesday, April 15th at 11.45 am. There you will get an overview of open Bachelor and Master projects. The projects will be presented by members of the HCI Group and can be discussed afterwards if any questions remain.

Furthermore, we offer two new courses:

‘Eye Tracking in HCI’ (directed studies) will already start on Monday, April 13th at 15:15 in PZ 901.
In this course, students acquire basic and in-depth knowledge about the functionality of eye trackers and their use in human-computer interaction. This involves a theoretical part where the students impart their knowledge in a presentation, and a practical part where they will gain hands-on experience in using different eye trackers.

‘New Trends in HCI – Role of Visions in HCI’ (seminar) will start on Tuesday, April 14th at 5 pm in PZ 901.
In this seminar we would like to take a look on popular visions in hci (e.g. the vision of ubiquitous computing). Each student will be assigned to one specific vision and will present it in detail. Furthermore we will discuss the influences of the vision on the hci community and whether is has become or will become reality or not.

Am 29.05.2015 findet in der Stadtbibliothek Köln ein Workshop der GI Fachgruppe Knowledge Media Design und der GI Fachgruppe Langzeitarchivierung/Emulation statt. Der Workshop ist offen für Interessenten, allerdings ist die Teilnehmerzahl begrenzt. 

Ziele des Workshops:

Die Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI) hat vergangenes Jahr eine Reihe von sogenannten Grand Challenges der Informatik definiert (siehe https://www.gi.de/themen/grand-challenges-der-informatik.html), in denen besondere Herausforderungen für die zukünftige Entwicklung beschrieben werden. Die Organisatoren dieses Workshops haben in diesem Rahmen die Grand Challenge „Erhalt des digitalen Kulturerbes“ definiert. Hier werden zentrale Fragen von langzeitlichen Erhaltungsaspekten bis hin zum Zugang zu erhaltenem Material gestellt.

Dieser erste Workshop zur GI-Grand Challenge „Erhalt des digitalen Kulturerbes“ beleuchtet das Thema von verschiedenen Seiten mit dem Ziel, eine erste Road Map zur Identifikation und möglichen Beantwortung dieser Herausforderungen zu entwickeln. Dazu werden eine Reihe von Experten/-innen aus Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und Praxis eingeladen, um die gesammelten Erfahrungen zum Thema in kurzen Impulsreferaten vorzustellen. Gemeinsam mit den Teilnehmern des Workshops soll dann in ausführlichen Diskussionen eine erste Sammlung von konkreten Herausforderungen und möglicher Lösungsansätze entwickelt und in einem ersten Entwurf einer zukünftigen Road Map gebündelt werden.

Seit Einzug des Internets in alle Lebensbereiche hat sich die Informationsrecherche grundlegend verändert. Wie sollen Bibliotheken auf diese Veränderung reagieren?  Gibt es Möglichkeiten, reale und digitale Welt in der Informationsvermittlung miteinander zu verzahnen?

Diese Fragen sind der Ausgangspunkt für das Forschungsprojekt „Quellentaucher“, das das Kulturministerium NRW in Kooperation mit der Universität Konstanz, AG Mensch-Computer Interaktion im Fachbereich Informatik und Informationswissenschaft, Prof. Dr. Reiterer, durchführt. Pilotbibliothek ist die Stadtbibliothek Köln. Die Projektleitung liegt beim Dezernat 48 Öffentliche Bibliotheken der Bezirksregierung Düsseldorf. In einem Vortrag auf dem 104. Bibliothekartag wurde die Medieninstallation „Quellentaucher“ vorgestellt, die unterschiedliche Besuchermotive aufgreift. Der Quellentaucher bietet zwei Rechercheansätze: Die „Expedition“ adressiert das Stöberbedürfnis von Besuchern. Sie reichert aktuelle Nachrichten mit diversen Zusatzinformationen aus dem World Wide Web an (z.B. Meinungstrends mit Twitter, biographische Hintergrundinformationen mit Munzinger) und generiert eine Medienempfehlung aus dem Bestand der Bibliothek. Im Gegensatz zur Expedition ermöglicht der „Tiefenrausch“ die intuitive Formulierung komplexer Suchanfragen mithilfe greifbarer Klötze (Tokens). Die Tokens repräsentieren Filter für unterschiedliche Suchkriterien (z.B. Stichworte oder Medientyp) und werden nacheinander auf ein interaktives Display gelegt und definiert. Die Ergebnisdarstellung passt sich entsprechend den Änderungen einer Anfrage dynamisch an. Dadurch lässt sich die Auswirkung eines einzelnen Suchschrittes auf die Ergebnisdarstellung leicht nachvollziehen. Im Vortrag wurden die beiden Rechercheansätze der Installation und erste Evaluationsergebnisse zum Nutzungsverhalten der Bibliothekskunden vorgestellt.

Harald Reiterer is giving a talk on June 10, 2015 at the EBSLG General Meeting 2015. The talk is entitled “Blended library - New user interface concepts to support information seeking and scientific writing” and starts at 9.00 AM.

The 2015 EBSLG General Meeting is themed “Insight, Impact, Interaction: Challenges for Libraries”. The meeting will take place in St.Gallen, Switzerland from 8 to 11 June 2015.

We are happy to announce that Harald Reiterer will co-organize a workshop on “Interacting with Multi-Device Ecologies in the Wild” at this year’s ITS conference in Funchal on the wonderful island of Madeira in Portugal in November 2015.

All workshop participants will also be invited to submit an extended full article of their submission for a special issue on “Interaction with Device Ecologies in the Wild” in the Personal and Ubiquitous Computing journal that will appear mid 2016.

SMARTACT: Individual and context-based real-time interventions promoting normal eating and physical activity through mobile technology

For a first kick-off of the interdisciplinary research project “SMARTACT: Individual and context-based real-time interventions promoting normal eating and physical activity through mobile technology”, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and leaded by Prof. Dr. Britta Renner and Prof. Dr. Harald Schupp, University of Konstanz, all principal investigators, researchers, members of the scientific advisory board and other stakeholders of the SMARTACT project met between the 17th and 18th of June in Konstanz. Keynotes from the Advisory Board members – Prof. Dr. Carol J. Boushey, University of Hawaii Cancer Center, USA and Prof. Dr. Stephen Sutton, University of Cambridge, UK – provided an overview about new technologies for assessing eating behavior and digital interventions for behavior change.

Our HCI Group is attending this year’s ITS conference on the beautiful island of Madeira. Our group contributed five workshop papers for the workshops Cross-Surface: Workshop on Interacting with Multi-Device Ecologies in the Wild and Collaboration Meets Interactive Surfaces (CMIS): Walls, Tables, Mobiles, and Wearables.

We are happy to announce that Harald Reiterer and Mario Schreiner will co-organize a workshop on “Interacting with Multi-Device Ecologies in the Wild” at the CHI 2016 conference in the heart of Silicon Valley: San Jose, California, USA. CHI 2016 will be held from May 7 to May 12 2016.

This is the second edition of the workshop, with a focus on Challenges and Opportunities for ‘Bring Your Own Device’ in the Wild. Please have a look at the workshop website to learn about the details and see the call for paper.

In einer Kooperation der Universität Konstanz und der HTWG Konstanz entstand die Ausstellung „Tell Genderes – 20 Meter Menschheitsgeschichte“. Die Studierenden präsentieren Ergebnisse der archäologischen Ausgrabung der antiken Ortschaft Genderes, die im heutigen Norden Syriens liegt.

Er wurde in mehreren Ausgrabungskampagnen von Archäologen aus Konstanz und Syrien untersucht. Sie haben das kulturelle Erbe Syriens (wieder) Schritt für Schritt freigelegt. Frühere Bewohner des Ortes haben mit ihren Hinterlassenschaften Schicht um Schicht den Hügel geformt und so wuchs Genderes immer weiter in die Höhe – der heutige Hügel (arabisch tell) bildet 20 Meter Menschheitsgeschichte ab.

Tauchen Sie in die Welt der Archäologie ein und scrollen Sie durch die Schichten dieses Tells. Entdecken Sie Mönche auf Säulen, den Handel der Antike und die unfassbaren Bauprogramme der Seleukidenherrscher. Die über 5000 Jahre alte Siedlungsgeschichte des Hügels kann ab dem 19.12.2015 im BildungsTURM interaktiv erforscht werden. Dabei wird die aktuelle Lage Syriens nicht aus den Augen verloren.
